Offensive greetings

Competitiveness, that’s the word I can use for fellow Chinese in Malaysia. Maybe not all, but in Sibu, it is definitely the best word to describe a Chinese here.

It is not because we all want to be competitive, but we don’t like to be offended for being… Too luxury, well, if you even understand that.

Greetings

Try one and you’ll see how Sibu Chinese works. Greeting like, “Wow, seems like you’re having a nice life here“, or a simple “Getting rich by the day eh?“, or sometimes, even “How do you do?” may be a very offensive questions. To defend themselves, only to put themselves into a smelly drain.

They’ll go, “Neh, making a hard living to meet end needs.“, “So, so, unlike you having a great car and etc.” or something similar, they will re-directed the questions back to you instead.

Perhaps, it is not about the questions, it is more about getting to know you than to let you know more about themselves. Either one will share it to you, or they will be offend when you question their life.

Come on, it’s Chinese New Year now. We all are good :)

Chinese, zodiac, calendar and numbers

When you talk about Chinese, you can’t get away from the shio (Chinese Zodiac), lunar calendar and of course, numbers. Each year, there will have some communion invitations for the Chinese to go look for their master and get advise about their luck.

Few months back while I was in Medan, I saw a cute boy sitting next to his mother. I took a longer look and “accidentally” I over heard the friend of his mother asked “How old is he?”, while I was too excited to know the age of the boy. The mother answered “He shio dragon”. I’m lazy to count. But hey, he is a “Dragon Boy” dawg!
Lion dance
Did you remember the legend about “Nian”? It was believe that each year according to lunar calendar, there will be a monster named “Nian” (literally mean “Year”) come to a village and destroy whatever it can destroy. There’s this year, when children are playing with firecracker, and accidentally scared off the monster. That’s why firecracker is compulsory in New Year, and the announcement about Chinese New Year was placed on the day too. So “Nian” is the Lion Dance, which always play with the firecracker… Wait, what?
Car plat number
44 (must have it double),168, 178 and etc. These probably are most profitable number in Malaysia or anywhere else that has Chinese population. Last I heard my friend’s dad bought the number 168 for RM10K excluding the vehicle. Chinese always believe that good number bring good luck. Even if the number is bad, they definitely go look for Lilian Too or some other master to make “correction“.

Twiblog

  • Nowadays Twitter is way too fun to stalk people and just talk shit
  • Everything that added Twi- will be related with twitter, or perhaps micro-blogging?
  • Back from Perhentian vacation, fun and tiring :P
  • Then went to Melaka, bought a wooden gun
  • Car air-con broken down, dammit!

Just when everybody getting boring with Twitter, I started to play with it :P It’s never too late though. A few things I am really headache with were the car condition :( Air-con is not functioning now, have to get to the garage soon, Proton-oh-Proton, when will you improve the quality of your product??? The landlord’s father brought a few pressure washers here. Thinking of washing my car this weekend now :D

Then my skin getting dark. When it getting dark, I need to expect Malay language. The other day I went to Sunway Pyramid, have a walk into a gift shop, the Chinese couple, look at me for a while, the girl came and say “Ini semua 5 ringgit sahaja.” Then we (the couple, my girlfriend and I) paused for a while. She continued “Yang sana tu pun sama juga, yang lain 3 ringgit.” Then I walked out the shop when my girlfriend bust out with laughs. The guy told the girl I was Chinese.

No, I am not angry for that. I just don’t know how should I react on that kind of situation, you feel me? The whole situation was freezing, how could I turned to her and tell her “Hehe… I am Chinese.” or “Hello? KNN, you cannot see I am Chinese is it?“…

A quick cup of coffee

The other day when my friend look for me for a tea, we chatting, again. It’s not a long one, nowadays it’s just a few hours only. However, he was wondering what to give for a baby. Recently his friend gonna get a baby soon, next month. He was thinking to get some unique baby gifts.

There was too much taboos around Chinese community, and it will still continue, because the old still continuing it. So, choosing a right thing is very very important especially those old folks are so mind about gifts. I don’t understand why do people don’t think thru it again and again, since those taboos actually a myth for now. Quite example my parents and girl friend likes to use on me – Don’t cut your nail at night. Why? Very quick, on the old age, when there wasn’t any light in the night, how can one cut their nail at night, right? So this teaching has been brought until today even when there are such a big freaking lighting around the house.

Well, like my mom always said “Better believe than no”. So yea, don’t cut nail at night.
