Of Bahasa Melayu

No, I’m not going to type Bahasa Melayu here, but I have things to tell about Bahasa and us, as Chinese-Malaysian.

It has been quite a long time since I step into church. I came here to Medan and started to attend church again on the weekend. The funny thing was, I attending Bahasa Indonesia language, which is still ok for me, understandable. Consider how many times I come to Medan and approach numerous time by agents about health insurance leads and bla bla bla on complex :)

However, today I was luckier, some Penangites came to the church and start sharing the experience or sort. However, this Chinese-Malaysian has difficulty on speaking Bahasa Melayu (the Malaysia one), on the opposite, all Chinese-Indonesian can speak rather fluent Bahasa Indonesia. How pathetic Chinese-Malaysian to be a Malaysian, we don’t speak our own nation language well.

1MalaysiaIn order to help 1Malaysia going, I believe nation language also the key? While a lot of my friends came and tell me it is useless to learn Bahasa since it’s going to be used only in Malaysia or maybe a little bit in Indonesia. But I’ll say, to know your nation language is to become a nation of its country, unless, of course, you’re not Malaysian.

P/S: I have to start learning Bahasa also now…

  1. Agree…!!! That’s y I think single stream of school is the only way to achieve national unity… but I support Chinese education too… hmmm… contradicting…

    • It’s more a personal thing lo… Any school, as long as the desire of learning bahasa will help. But who cares now? :?

  2. You are right.
There are Chinese and Indians who couldn’t speak BM at all after decades of becoming a Malaysian citizen. In the USA if you can’t speak English you are not eligible to get citizenship.
It is wrong to consider BM only for Malays ; it is a national language which is for the purpose of unifying the citizen. You should be proud to able to speak BM well because you are a Malaysian . All Malays think highly of non- Malays who are fluent in Malay. Actually you can make more Malay friends. Chinese in Malay villages have close friendship with the Malays because they could talk and joke with the Malays.
I also think Chinese language should be a subject in all national type schools. asm

    • Right, BM is national language, not a race language. All nation should be able to speak their own country nation language, else it is embarrassing…
